HISTORY OF THE BRUSSELS WOMEN's CLUB GOLF - BWC Golf
(Formerly BCWCB Golf Club)
(Formerly BCWCB Golf Club)
1970
Valerie Thorne and Marjorie Wales arranged for BCWCB members to play at Bercuit. A group of up to 12 members used to play there regularly on Monday mornings.
1983
Margaret Latham took over leadership of the group which, by then, was playing at The Royal Club de Belgique, Ravenstein and The Royal Waterloo Golf Club. A small ad. in Passport produced 70 replies from golfers and others wanting to take up the sport. With such an increase in numbers we were able to organise competitions, the first being held at Ravenstein in October with 16 participants. Monthly competitions were organised and, later, Spring and Autumn Knock-out Competitions arranged.
1985-90
Following a car accident Margaret handed over the running of the group to Gill Williams who in turn was replaced by Joan McInerny before Margaret took over again in 1990.
1990
A successful application was made for affiliation to the Ladies Golf Union (LGU) in Scotland. The first committee was elected on 20th November (official birthday) and 6 courses at 3 Golf Clubs in the Brussels area were measured for LGU purposes. As the "British and Commonwealth Women’s Club of Brussels Golf Club" we became a club within a club – and were able to issue official LGU handicaps and certificates.
1994
Margaret Latham was appointed Honorary Life President of the Club.
2000
The 10th birthday of the Club was celebrated with a Mixed 4BBB competition at Ravenstein, followed by a special gala dinner. We now have a full programme of Medal, Stableford and fun-format competitions together with Knock-outs, matches against other clubs and Mixed (husbands invited) competitions as well as, on the social side, luncheons and golf rules and etiquette evenings. A member of the committee is responsible for encouraging those new to the game to reach the required standard to progress to playing on the course, and eventually in competitions.
2015
The 25th birthday of the Club was celebrated with a dinner on Thursday, 22nd October at Brabantse GC and a stableford competition at Louvain La Neuve on Friday, 23rd October. Several past Captains and Members joined us for this celebration. A special commemorative pin has been produced which has been distributed to current members and to key participants during special events throughout this celebration year. Click here to see photos from the event.
2020
The 30th Birthday celebrations were put on hold due to the Covid pandemic. In March 2021, still under lock-down, we had a small celebration at the AGM, held on Zoom, by then the norm for all get-togethers. All members, captains past and present, together with Margaret Latham, the club's founding member and Honorary President, were toasted to the back-drop of a slide show.
